Nick Dobkin

I graduated from the University of Hartford with a Business Administration degree with a major in Economics and Finance.  Living in Hartford, a city often associated with insurance, it was a natural progression to pursue a career in the insurance industry.

As I explored prospects at the large primary carriers, as well a few others in the financial sector, I learned of Aspens Graduate Programme through my Universities career services.  With little knowledge of reinsurance the program quickly stood out as a unique entrance into the insurance industry and after an initial interview my interest was piqued.  Underwriting appealed for its blend of analytical and social requirements and Aspen was offering an excellent opportunity to learn the business.

My education at Aspen commenced with a three week Graduate Induction at our London office.  Together with a group of graduate trainees I was introduced to the business units that comprise Aspen as well as the general workings of our industry.  I have since spent my first year at Aspen in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, US working alongside a senior property underwriter where I have been involved in all areas of the business including client visits, broker negotiations and pricing exercises.

In addition to the on-the-job training Aspen offers ample opportunities for professional development.  I am currently pursuing both the ARe and CPCU designations and have attended various conferences and seminars.  This reflects a culture at Aspen that is committed to the development of both individuals and the group as a whole.  In short, I have found my time here to be challenging and the environment has been very supportive and highly professional.
