Yuan Liang

I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computer Science with Business and Management in 2004. Having decided that I wanted to work in the Finance industry, I then pursued a Masters degree in Finance from the University of York.

While I was doing my masters degree, Insurance was not in my mind as a career until I saw the advert for a graduate programme at Aspen. After a bit of research, I found the Insurance sector is fast moving and thriving. The Insurance industry is beginning to understand that technology is there to help them to move forward and gain competitive advantages. I think it is a good time to join Insurance within an IT context.

I have now been at Aspen for about two years. During the past two years, I have rotated to different teams within the IT department as a graduate trainee. Having worked in the Applications team, I have gained in depth knowledge about various core applications and experience of full software delivery cycle. The time I spent in the IT Operations team has also been very valuable. I have worked on disaster recovery, office move, daily service delivery, etc.
During work, I have the opportunity to develop business and technical knowledge as well as interpersonal skills. I have also been supported to carry out further study, both internally and externally, from Insurance to IT.

I have now graduated from the programme and am now working as a Business Analyst in the Applications team. I am given very diversified projects to work on, from underwriting systems to intranet, from document management systems to business process. I like working closely with the business and interacting with underwriters.
Aspen's working atmosphere is great. My colleagues are very professional, but approachable, friendly and helpful. Work and life balance is also good here. My first two years have been challenging, interesting and enjoyable!
