Angus Fyfe

I graduated from Southampton University with an Aerospace Engineering degree in 2003, and this should reinforce the point that any degree discipline is suitable for a career at Aspen.

Insurance (and even more so, reinsurance) is often underrated and overlooked by graduates when considering their career options, but in reality it has substantially more to offer than other business-related professions.

Aspen is a rapidly growing company that gives graduates a great sense of individuality and responsibility. I have been expected to contribute effectively to my work from the outset. In addition, Aspen's dedication to training is easily comparable to those of the very largest firms. Here, I am myself; people respect me and value my opinions. I certainly don't feel that I've been pigeonholed from day one. The underwriters expect me to ask questions as I have been learning from them "on the job" and not in a classroom; even when I do take exams, I can chose which ones I want to do, and when the best time is to sit them.

Granted, there are some tedious tasks that the underwriting assistant will have to cope with, but the real work is very rewarding. Producing quotes for the underwriter, helping to develop the pricing process, and interacting with clients. There is plenty of opportunity to get out of the office, and overseas, and the growth of the company will ensure that I will never get stuck in a rut. This is also aided by the wealth of social and sporting opportunities available, not only through Aspen, but also through the Lloyd's market.
