I graduated from the University of Southampton in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics with Actuarial studies. I decided to go into underwriting as a career rather than becoming an actuary because underwriting allowed me to work in the city, using the analytical tools I had learnt, in a business environment where the work life balance suited me. I have always enjoyed meeting new people; underwriting allows me to develop my social skills through working with brokers, clients and colleagues. Working for Aspen is definitely not just an office job.

I completed a summer internship with Aspen during my second year of university. While on my placement I realised that Aspen was a company that placed great emphasis on the development of its staff. The majority of training is "on the job" which allows me to get stuck straight in. I was placed in a small team of 10 people where I worked with both underwriters and assistants on a one to one basis. On my first day I was thrown in at the deep end, getting involved with projects and the day-to-day running of the team. Everyone in the team was really patient and helpful and I soon felt at ease. My internship confirmed that underwriting was the career for me and Aspen was the firm I wanted to work for.

The day-to-day job has some routine aspects for a beginner, like data entry and scanning, but the job is made worthwhile by the learning and travel opportunities available along with the opportunities for advancement. If like me you want a professional qualification in a stimulating and challenging environment, with good career and social opportunities, then Aspen is the company for you.
